Touristic Lviv amazes with its narrow European streets and beauty of its ancient architecture. Strolling around magic Lviv, you will repeatedly notice stamped or drawn image of the famous lion which came from Bavaria and is displayed on the emblem of the most beautiful city in Ukraine.
The emblem characterizing the history and ancient traditions of the place is the symbol of every city. Of course, the emblem of the city displays its name as a golden lion and those customs which ancient Lviv preserves. The emblem was approved in July 1990 by the City Council. You can see the small and large emblems of the city. The gold lion located at the city gates is the guardian of Lviv. He zealously guards the tradition of citizens and symbolizes the strength, the power, and the courage of soldiers.
Government and administrative buildings of the city are adorned with the emblem. For example, there are two statues of lions with shields depicting the emblem of Lviv near the Town Hall. Besides the emblem, the city is full of sculptures – the forged and the wood ones – picturing the defender and guardian of the city.
The blue rectangle with rounded base depicts the stone gates of gold color. There are three towers with the central one towering above all the rest. Gate entrance symbolizes the powerful fortress. The tops of the towers are decorated with tridents and loopholes. In the middle, the golden lion walking to the right is pictured.
The big city emblem
The center of the composition is the small emblem placed on a shield. The composition of the small emblem on the shield is the same as in the original version. The big emblem is decorated with a silver column with three prongs. The emblem is guarded by a golden lion with a crown on one side and a warrior of ancient Rus of times of Danylo Galytskyi on the other. This is evidenced by his clothing and armor. Below, the emblem is adorned with a trident and a ribbon in Ukrainian national yellow and blue colors.
