Mother Motherland: Is One Of The Largest Statues In The World
One of the greatest monuments in the world is located in Ukraine. This building is very hard to miss. The figure of a woman with a shield and sword in her hands is made of stainless sheet steel. The weight of this incredible architectural creation is 500 tons. The author of Mother Motherland is a well-known Ukrainian architect Vasyl Borodai. With his sketches, workers and scientists, putting their Herculean efforts, have introduced architect’s designs in life. The First Secretary of the Central Committee – Leonid Brezhnev –was present at the opening of the monument in person.
The monument Mother Motherland is a unique structure. For the first time in the USSR, the sculpture of this size was made at the Kyiv plant named by Paris Commune with the advice of the Institute of Electric Welding named after Ie. O. Paton concerning joints on welding stainless steel elements separate block-sections, weighing 25-30 tons. During the installation, about thirty kilometers of welding seams were applied. There is a special device for damping wind loading at the highest point of the sword. Interestingly, a special 100-meter crane was made for constructing the sculpture, and after that it was dismantled.
Inside the sculpture, there is a special elevator that brings people to the viewing platform at the height of 36.6 m and 91 m. Monument Mother Motherland has become a symbol of Kyiv, but today it is a sign of not only of capital but also the entire country. The building belonged to the ratings of the highest and the greatest statues in the world several times. In 2014, the British newspaper The Telegraph published the photos of 11 most amazing sculptures in the world. And Kyiv Mother Motherland was included in the list as well.
