The Best Ukrainian Universities: 2015 Edition
Recently, we’ve told about the top three higher education institutions of Kyiv, but everything is clear regarding them, right? Kyiv National University (or people simply “Sheva”), KPI and Mogilyanka steadily occupy the first three positions in the annual ranking all over Ukraine, occasionally exchanging places. And who goes follows them? This is what we are going to tell today.
V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University
The educational establishment was founded over 200 years ago, in 1804, and it became one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. During this time more than 130,000 students graduated from it, including a large number of public and cultural figures (even Mykhailo Grushevskyi!). In the year when the university was founded, only 56 students enrolled, but only 26 of them managed to graduate. It is the only university in Ukraine that has trained and then taught three Nobel Prize Laureates – Illia Mechnykov (Biology), Lev Landau (Physics), and Simon Smith (Economy). Today, there are 20 faculties, 115 specializations, and more than 115,000 students. And, according to legend, there are nine floors of dungeons underground and ghosts coming out of portraits at night.
Odessa I.I.Mechnikov National University
Imperial Novorossiysk University was based on the Richelieu Lyceum, and it was named after the outstanding scientist only in 1945.
It is also one of the oldest universities in the country and the only one that continued working during the entire Second World War, even in evacuation. 4 institutes, 10 faculties, 102 departments, thousands of students, many mysteries and secrets – that’s what we have nowadays.
Masons left the mysterious signs on the university walls. There is a predatory fish, which can predict both success and failure. The basement of an old dormitory is inhabited by a ghost. And if you see a squirrel in the courtyard of the university, the lectures will be cancelled.
Sumy State University
The university in Sumy is also among the top ten, though we don’t hear about it as much as about famous rating neighbors.
It is located in the Cossack city will celebrate its 70th anniversary next year. There are 3 institutes, 9 faculties, and about 17,000 students. The University has established system of international relations and has a good library.
There are many athletes among the students (candidates and masters of sports, winners of European and World Championships).
National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine
The history begins from 1898, when the Polytechnic Institute has opened an agricultural department. Subsequently, five buildings appeared, and the institution became fully independent. In 1941, a line of defense was situated near, and a memorial and traces of trenches remind about it till present days. You can come out to the university from Golosiivskyi park. Actually, it always happens so when you miss a turn to Golosiivskyi Ave. The Botanical Garden of the University is worth mentioning, too. It is located in the area where once Golosiivskyi bowery was located and where Petro Mohyla founded a monastery. Today, you can see the ancient oaks planted by Maksym Rylskyi, who lived nearby.
National Aerospace University – Kharkiv Aviation Institute
There are many myths and legends about the stars and the starry sky, the origin of the constellations etc. Films about space and astronauts whom ordinary people treat like real heroes are always interesting. And it turns out that Ukraine is a place where you can join all this unusual. Here, qualified specialists in the aerospace and aviation industries are prepared. After all, Ukraine is one of the few states where machinery for these fields is developed and manufactured. Although there aren’t many astronauts among us, everything can happen in the future. Today, the university is like a separate town, located in the park area.
National Aviation University
The position of the “best heaven university” is share by Kharkiv and Kyiv educational establishments. The latter one was founded in 1933 as the Aviation Institute of Polytechnic University. Its name has been changed several times, rectors and professors were changed as well, and there are quite a lot of well-known names among them. Today, it is one of the largest and most famous universities in the country that trains specialists not only engineering fields.
