Foreign Music Videos That Were Filmed In Ukraine. VIDEO
Ukrainian bands often work with foreign sound producers and labels, they shoot video in unusual locations in distant countries. And then we imagine that somewhere in an alternative universe everything happens just the opposite way. Actually, this parallel reality is not that far. We can easily call more than 10 well-known bands and artists, whose music videos were filmed in Ukraine.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Is not No Easy Way (2005)
Indie rock band from San Francisco while talking about shooting the video for some reason said the set took place in Russia. In fact, installation and plot are as clumsy as the comment, but everything is combined with the music pretty harmonic.
Natalie Imbruglia – Shiver (2005)
One of the most famous videos of the Australian singer (and among the most famous ones shot in Ukraine) captures the illegal racing on the streets of Podil. The singer recalled shooting process as somewhat contradictory; and it was very cold. One thing will never become clear to the locals: she sat in the train at the Central railway station and arrived there.
Tame Impala – Solitude is Bliss (2010)
Australian band filmed the video for the first single from their debut album in Ukraine. Moskovskyi and Gavanskyi Bridges and some central streets of the capital appear on the screen. Fans reacted to video a bit controversially. However, the musicians told that they received the most pleasant experience while working in Kyiv. And though some people think that the music and the picture don’t fit well, musicians think of their work not just as of a music video but more like a scene from a film. And their song is soundtrack.
Pink Floyd – Marooned (2014)
The band decided to reissue The Division Bell album of 1994 on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary. In addition to the album with full versions of tracks and vinyl, new music video waited for fans from all around the world for the new clip. Abandoned Space Station returned to the Earth. There are ruins all round – the ruins, and a lonely man wandering there. These ruins are located in Pripiat, where Chornobyl Power Plant used to be.
Santigold – Kicking Down Doors (2014)
The famous director Andy Morahan was shooting video for this a bit revolutionary song in the center of the Ukrainian capital. The singer wasn’t present while filming. The events on the screen are painfully familiar. Filming caused a lot of trouble, mostly because of the preparation: it was necessary not to spread panic among locals. The track was put on the record devoted the latest World Cup.
Lonely The Brave – Backroads (2014)
Video for the alternative band from Cambridge was shot by Greg Davenport. The song has immediately caused the association with the ideas of escape and freedom. The director was aware of all events happening while Dignity Revolution in Ukraine from the very beginning, and he even spent New Year’s Eve on the Independence Square. The places on the screen are all familiar – Independence Square, Rybalskyi Bridge, Trukhaniv Island, Shevchenko Boulevard.
Paolo Nutini – Iron Sky (2014)
Paolo Nutini is a Scottish singer of Italian origin. Together with director Daniel Wolff, he created a real road-movie, a kind of film journey, where Ukrainians of different social strata are starring. Four-day journey to the capital and surrounding areas has become the best video at UK Video Awards. Skyscrapers of Troieshchyna, vacant lots of nearby CHP-6, a field, and abandoned bus fleet №7 have become the decorations for the video.
Mumford & Sons – Ditmas (2015)
London folk band received Grammy for the Best Album of the Year in 2011, an award from the BRIT Awards in 2013, has frequently been the best alternative artist. In July this year the band shot a video for the song Ditmas, and shooting took place near the capital. The band presented a video on the official page on Facebook, writing that the shooting took place on a beautiful expanse of countryside near Kyiv. A Cossack performing difficult stunts is in the center of the story. At the time of the shooting, Alex South, the video director, became very interested in the history of Ukrainian Cossacks.
Years & Years – Shine (2015)
The British trio producing electro-pop with the elements of R’n’B and house released their debut single in 2012, and the debut album appeared in summer of 2015. The single Shine also entered the album, and video for the song was filmed in Pushcha-Vodytsia. Here, the director managed to find appropriate mystics and to complete the picture with Soviet interior elements. And if you look closely, you can even notice some Ukrainian labels, tags etc.
Foals – What Went Down (2015)
The band appeared in 2005 and has already become a legend of indie-rock. Initially, the musicians didn’t even perform on a stage, just in a crowd of people. Today, they have 19 singles, 6 EP, 4 full albums, 1 video album, and even video, shot in Troieschyna. Indeed, where else can you shoot the story of the struggle for survival, if not in this particular residential district of Kyiv? Vacant lots of Troieshchyna and so-called Kiev Sea appear on the screen.
Paloma Faith – Beauty Remains (2015)
Paloma Faith arrives to Ukraine not for the first time. This time, she didn’t just attend some closed event, where her friend Nicole Scherzinger performed, but posed against the backdrop of the Soviet interior.
Rudimental – Never Let You Go (2015)
British musicians from the suburbs of London working in electronic genre filmed the video in four countries at once. So it’s not only the Victory Park and wasteland of Troieschyna. This is the United Kingdom, the United States, and Morocco. The musicians say that their video is the manifesto of freedom and peace. Whatever it was, the fans liked it.
Tame Impala – Let It Happen (2015)
“You’ve already mentioned those”, you might say. Thus, the Australian rockers decided to return. This time, the set took place at Boryspil Airport and Hilton Hotel.
