What To See And Where To Go On Independence Day
On August 24, Ukraine will celebrate its 24th anniversary of the Independence. A wide range of bright events, which will begin in the morning and last until the evening, wait for all citizens and visitors of the capital. In order to be sure you won’t miss anything important, WeLoveUA team will tell you about what and where will take place during the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine.
The official opening celebration will start on August 23, on State Flag Day, at 09 a.m., on Sofiiska Sq., where the Flag-Raising Ceremony will be opened by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
Besides, on August 23, a festival competition for children called Desired Ukraine Through Children’s Eyes will take place on 36 Khreshchatyk St., on the stairs near the City Council Building. The National Opera of Ukraine will host an art event Nobody But Us. The guests of Spivoche Pole will be able to watch a concert devoted to the State Flag Day.
Different flash mobs with celebrities will take place on Sofiiska Sq., Mykhailivska Sq., Kontraktova Sq., and Pryvokzalna Sq., as well as the signing of National Flag for sending it to anti-terrorist operation zone.
On August 23-24, Kyiv residents and visitors will be able to visit diverse cultural events in different Parks (Victory Park, Park of Partisan Glory, Gidropark, and Golosiivskyi in particular). On August 22-23, Andriivskyi Descent will host the festival of arts.
On August 23-25, Sofiiska Sq. will host the exhibition of military flags of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine and State Border Service of Ukraine, who took part in anti-terrorist operation.
On August 24, the Independence Day, there will be held a ceremony of putting flowers to the monuments to Taras Shevchenko, Mykhailo Grushevskyi, and the monument to Memory of Heroes of Heavenly Hundreds on Instytutska St.
On Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Khreshchatyk, the Independence Parade will take place. At 1 p. m. creative teams of art schools will participate in the concert on the main street of the capital, and at 4.30 p. m. the gala concert will start on Khreshchatyk.
From August 21 to September 14, the municipal Exhibition of flower compositions will take place at Pecherskyi Landscape Park, and it will symbolize the unity and integrity of Ukraine.
It should also be noted that from the 21st to the 24th of August, the movement will be partially blocked and the traffic will be stopped on some streets of the capital because of the preparations and holding the celebrations.
On the 20th and 22nd of August, the movement on Khreshchatyk will be blocked from 7 p. m. till 11 p. m. during the exercise of parade squads on the street.
On the 23rd and 24th of August, the movement near the places of celebrations will be blocked for all means of transport and in some places even for pedestrians. The names of those streets are provided below:

On August 24 from 06 a. m. till 10 p. m., the traffic on Khreshchatyk St., Bogdan Khmelnytskyi St., and European Sq. will be blocked as well.
