Mykhailo Dzyndra Museum Of Modern Sculpture
This is the first and so far the only one museum of modern sculpture in Ukraine with the unique world of abstract sculpture represented.
It exhibits a collection of unique works of abstract art, including sculpture plastic associations, abstract forms and relief portraits. Museum area amounts to 1450 sq. m and doesn’t have any walls or redistribution, there is one huge hall, where you feel like in a maze wandering among the mysterious sculptures. A huge number of works is truly impressive, and when you look more closely, you realize that each of them is like a small individual part of a rich inner world. Guests find themselves in complete freedom, for there are no tablets with names of sculptures near them. So everyone can train their imagination and come up with a name. And then you can book an excursion and find out about the original names.
“I returned to Ukraine because I felt my duty, I was born here and my ancestors lived here. I am glad to be such a happy person and to do so much”.
There’s no need to be an art expert to understand Mykhailo Dzyndra’s works. The idea of the museum is to make the imagination of visitors dream, and only in this case each sculpture will be revealed anew from different angles.
The museum often hosts various art events and recitals. Almost always, you can meet the artist’s wife, Sofia, who will tell you about the life and work of a great master better than anyone else.
The sculptor Mykhailo Dzyndra (1921-2006) in 1991 returned to Ukraine from the USA. He built the museum with own funds, which has placed more than 800 sculptures he has brought presented to the state, namely Lviv Art Gallery. The artistic heritage of Dzyndra, which is also exhibited in the museum, introduces its unique world of abstract sculpture. The artist became interested in the modern sculpture in the early 1950s. He was attracted by the transformation of real objects, searching for new properties of abstract shapes, the plastic harmony of compositions, new quality of free forms, and properties of spatial solutions. His amazing journey of imagination and plastic associations are easily traced in every piece of work, like The Fantasy of Many, Singers, A Woman With Long Hair, Dictator, Journey in A Space, A Dance, and many other sculptures.

My father did some amazing work and I’m glad I was able to help him ship his artwork to his museum from America to Ukraine. One day I might be able to go there if only to see his work once again.
